For generations, India's traditional artisans—carpenters, blacksmiths, potters, cobblers, sculptors, and tailors—have operated in the informal economy, borrowing from local moneylenders at exorbitant monthly interest rates (often 36% to 60% per annum).
The PM Vishwakarma Scheme transforms this landscape by providing institutional identity, subsidized modern toolkits, professional skill upgradation, and collateral-free credit at an unbelievable 5% interest rate, with the Central Government absorbing an interest subvention of up to 8%!
The scheme is specifically tailored for artisans and craftspeople who work with their hands and traditional tools across 18 listed trades:
- Wood-Based: Carpenter (Suthar), Boat Maker.
- Iron / Metal-Based: Blacksmith (Lohar), Armourer, Locksmith, Hammer & Tool Kit Maker.
- Clay / Stone-Based: Potter (Kumhaar), Sculptor (Moortikar / Stone Carver), Stone Breaker.
- Leather-Based: Cobbler (Charmakar) / Shoesmith / Footwear Artisan.
- Construction-Based: Mason (Rajmistri).
- Other Artisans: Basket/Mat/Broom Maker / Coir Weaver, Doll & Toy Maker (Traditional), Barber (Naai), Garland Maker (Malakaar), Washerman (Dhobi), Tailor (Darzi), and Fishing Net Maker.
The credit support is structured in two progressive, collateral-free tranches:
- Tranche 1: Up to ₹1,00,000 for a repayment tenure of 18 months.
- Eligible upon completion of basic 5-7 day skill training.
- Concessional interest rate: 5% per annum fixed (Central govt pays the rest directly to the bank).
- Tranche 2: Up to ₹2,00,000 for a repayment tenure of 30 months.
- Available after you have regularly repaid Tranche 1 and maintained active digital transaction habits.
- No Prepayment Penalty: You can prepay your loan at any time without extra charges.
In addition to subsidized loans, every verified Vishwakarma beneficiary receives:
- ₹500 per day stipend during the 5 to 7-day Basic Skill Training.
- ₹15,000 digital voucher (e-RUPI) directly into your mobile wallet to purchase modern electronic and ergonomic toolkits from authorized dealers.
- Digital Transaction Cashback: ₹1 per transaction for up to 100 digital sales transactions every month.
To ensure only genuine traditional craftsmen benefit, every application undergoes rigorous 3-stage validation:
- Stage 1: Verification by the Gram Panchayat Sarpanch (in rural areas) or the Executive Officer of the Urban Local Body (ULB) in cities.
- Stage 2: Screening by the District Implementation Committee headed by the District Collector.
- Stage 3: Final approval by the State Level Committee.
Artisans do not need to struggle with complex online portals:
- Visit your nearest village or ward Common Service Centre (CSC) with your Aadhaar, bank passbook, and active mobile number.
- Complete biometric e-KYC authentication.
- The CSC operator will capture photos of you working with your traditional tools.
- Upon approval, you will receive your official PM Vishwakarma Digital Certificate and ID Card.
